Broken Glass awards celebrates women in film

The word is out:  This Palm Springs Women In Film & TV (PSWIFT) luncheon event is more sophisticated and celebrity-packed than many evening galas.

But then, what would you expect from an event run by the likes of  president Patti Gribow, co-chair ElaineChurch, vocal performer Patricia Welch interviewer Pattie Daly Caruso,  emcee Karen Devine and special events chair DeAnn Lubell-Ames; plus the honorary “woman in film” co-chair Mitch Blumberg.

The most striking thing about the five famous women being honored was their humility. In accepting their awards, each of them spent more time praising PSWIFT members, their  scholarships and mentoring, than in talking about themselves.  Each of  the honorees privately  (some in the lady’s room) also assured me that, “I’ve never had more fun – I would not have missed this for anything!”

The accomplished women honored at this event were:

Joyce Bulifant,  Who has entertained us since “Perry Mason” and “Love Boat,” will be back in the desert next month in “The Grand Ole Dame” which she co-wrote with her husband.

Donna MacMillan, whose hundreds of accomplishments include being the current chair of the Palm Springs Art Museum, received the Humanitarian Award.

Beverly Johnson The first African-American Supermodel, highly successful entrepreneur, and a top local golfer, was awarded the very appropriate Voice of Courage Award.

Mary McDonnell, a frequent Oscar and Emmy nominee, currently stars as “Captain Raydor” in TNT’s “Major Crimes” and was accompanied by seven of her co-stars.

Jane Seymour , who stayed late for a book-signing of her latest book, “Open Heart Family.” She looked so youthful that many thought she had been replaced by one of her daughters.

Some wistful memories were part of the conversations at this year’s event:

  • DeAnn Lubell-Ames remembered  how much her late husband, Lee Ames had enjoyed working on last year’s PSWIFT show.
  • Friends of  the late Gloria Greer kept expecting her to walk in: “She’s always late, you know.”
  • Author and Desert Sun Guest Reporter Alexis Hunter announced a book signing for her fast-selling book “Joi Lansing – A Body To Die For” will be taking  place on December 5, from  1 to 3 PM at Town Center Pharmacy (info – 760-341-3984).

The 300 attendees displayed their wide-ranging talents by promoting their own projects like savvy businesswomen,  applauding like fervent fans, squealing over the gift bag’s  free coupons,  and lapping  up local gossip in the bar afterwards. Pattie Caruso and Kate Spates got me a bit tipsy….but don’t worry – I thanked them sincerely.
